U.S. may recognize Israel as Jewish state: Hamas chief

Speaking at a press conference in Bethlehem as Christians prepare to celebrate Christmas at the site where Jesus Christ is traditionally believed to have been born, Christian leaders said that without peace in Jerusalem, there will not be peace anywhere in the world. A Palestinian youth dressed as Santa Claus was also injured in the legs with live bullets during clashes in southern Gaza and was transferred to the European Hospital for treatment. Eleven Palestinians have been killed in the violence since Trump's declaration, with the most recent Red Crescent figures placing Palestinian casualties in the Gaza Strip at around 629 and in the West Bank 2908.

The clashes broke out after the weekly Muslim prayers, with minor scuffles in Jerusalem. However, despite Hamas's speculation, there appears to be no other evidence that the U.S. plans to announce Israel's Jewish character anytime soon.

The comments in Paris came hours after 128 members of the United Nations voted to condemn US President Donald Trump's decision on December 6 to unilaterally recognise Jerusalem as the capital of Israel.

Perhaps as few as 50,000 Palestinian Christians make up just around two percent of the predominantly Muslim population of the West Bank and east Jerusalem.

On Tuesday, Palestine's Safa news agency revealed that Israeli planned to inaugurate a synagogue near Al-Buraq Wall (Western Wall).

"Because of this decision, we will not accept the U.S.as a mediator in the peace process", he said.

Macron repeated his earlier condemnations of the U.S. decision on Jerusalem, but he also ruled out recognising Palestine as a state unilaterally, which France has mooted previously.

Following a UN Security Council resolution that would have passed unanimously but for a USA veto, the UN General Assembly passed a resolution spurning the US move by 128-9 votes. We have a massive strategic arsenal.

Palestinians view east Jerusalem as the capital of their future state, and interpreted Trump's statement as rejecting their right to a capital in east Jerusalem, although the Americans deny this.
