The Liverpool Echo says the Reds have been in contact with Goretzka's representatives and are trying to persuade him to move to Anfield when his Schalke contract expires in the summer.

"He has signed a contract with Bayern from July 1, 2018".

Schalke 04 confirmed today that Germany midfielder Leon Goretzka will join Bayern Munich at the end of this season on a free transfer, with the Bundesliga leaders beating Liverpool to his signature.

"Leon [Goretzka] told us at the start of the week that he wanted to leave the club to join Bayern Munich", Heidel revealed.

Karl-Heinz Rummenigge, Bayern Munich CEO, added: "We are very happy that Leon has decided, despite considerable competition from overseas, to sign for FC Bayern".

Bayern chief, Karl-Heinz Rummenigge, has confirmed the club were keen to bring in the German worldwide. Heidel adds: "We can deal with this situation; it was not a total surprise".

Schalke head coach Domenico Tedesco also commented on the loss: "We are sad and disappointed to lose Leon the player and the person..."

"We won't be bringing in a replacement for Leon in this window - he wouldn't still be here otherwise". Our fans have always supported our team and Leon will be part of it in the second half of the season. "We have time between now and the summer to consider our options going forward".
