Note: Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools will be closed Monday, along with the library system and post offices.

Today, ahead of Martin Luther King Jr.

A spokesman said all families are encouraged to participate in this hands-on community service day.

U.S. Sen. Doug Jones, D-Ala., will kick off a day of events commemorating Martin Luther King Day in Birmingham on Monday, where Alabama's newest senator will be the guest speaker at the MLK Unity Breakfast at the BJCC North Exhibition Hall.

At that evening ceremony, officials with the Indiana Civil Rights Commission recalled King's connection to the Hoosier capital through Andrew J. Brown, founder of Indiana Black Expo. On that day, and every day, we should all be an advocate for people who face injustices in their lives.

The activities they had planned for this year's event would have needed more people than were signed up to be powerful and meaningful, she said.
