IDF says it destroyed a Hamas attack tunnel in southern Gaza

It was also noted that Kerem Shalom border crossing on the Gaza Strip-Israel border would be closed later in the day for security reasons.

In contrast to Hamas' claims that the tunnel was used for smuggling goods, the IDF unequivocally stated that it was an attack tunnel used to smuggle in weapons, terrorists and other operatives into Israel in order to carry out terror attacks.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu committed to respond to the Hamas terrorist organization with "even greater force" if necessary, alluding to an overnight strike on "terrorist infrastructure" on the Gaza-Sinai border.

Palestinian sources say that a tunnel was the target of the attack and none reported hurt in the attack according local sources in Gaza. The army said the decision, which is unusual, was reached "in accordance with current assessments".

Israel had shut down Kerem Shalom on December 14 following multiple rocket attacks from Gaza, along with Erez Crossing, through which people enter and exit the Strip.

The military said that it does not intend to bring about an escalation of the situation, but will continue to act against any violation of Israeli sovereignty.

It is the second time Kerem Shalom has been closed in under a month.

It is also building an underground wall in the area around the Gaza Strip to stop such tunnels.

According to official Palestinian media, that "infrastructure" was farmland in the southern Gaza Strip, prompting many to assume that it was, in fact, a tunnel beneath the field.

The IDF demolished a terror tunnel late Motzoei Shabbos, the army announced Sunday morning. In response, the IDF fired live rounds towards the main instigators who were believed to pose a threat to IDF soldiers and the security fence.

The Hamas-run Gaza health ministry said dozens of Palestinians were injured by live fire, rubber bullets and tear gas during the riots.

"The thwarting of the terrorist tunnel, the third in Israeli territory in recent weeks, is more proof of the IDF's advanced operational, intelligence and technological capabilities", read a statement by the IDF Spokesperson's Unit.
