"It's our people who make the difference and we appreciate how they work hard to make every day easier for busy families", he said.
The Lithonia and Memphis stores are not the only ones.
Wal-Mart Stores Inc on Thursday announced it would raise the minimum wage for United States workers to US$11 an hour and pay bonuses, but announced plans to close 63 Sam's Club stores in the US. While those stores will reopen in a new role, workers previously employed at those locations are not necessarily guaranteed a role in the new positions. The official Sam's Club Twitter account replied to some questions with a brief statement.
Town Manager Bill Manzi said he received a call from the Seabrook store manager on Thursday confirming the closure of the store at 11 Batchelder Road.
Additional reporting contributed by USA TODAY's Charisse Jones.
Three stores in IN are being closed, two in Indianapolis and one in Goshen, according to a Sam's Club employee.
The company said 63 stores across the country will be closed or converted to distribution centers.
The official Twitter page for Sam's Club's posted a message at 12:23 p.m. Thursday that said the company "decided to close a series of clubs and better align our locations with our strategy". The one-time bonus represents an additional payment to associates of approximately $400 million, Walmart said.
Employees with at least 20 years at Walmart will qualify for the bonus, the company said, and the wage hike will take effect February 1. The amount will range up to $1,000 for employees who have been with Walmart for at least 20 years.
Walmart is also increasing its paid leave policy for new fathers and non-birthing mothers to six weeks at full pay for full-time hourly workers.
Hourly-paid employees will get the higher rate from next month.
The changes in parental leave put salaried and hourly workers on the same footing.
Although Wal-Mart's move lifts its overall starting USA wage from $10 an hour (after workers take a training course), the increase matches what's already the minimum wage in California.
