She was pronounced dead at the scene.

Officers responded to a shots fired call at 1:44 p.m. on Thursday and found White dead inside a home on Carlyle Drive with an apparent gunshot wound, police said.

"Times like this make you appreciate people who voluntarily put their lives on the line to keep us safe", Putney said, emphasizing that officers have a "dangerous job".

The officer's injuries are not life threatening, police said. An officer was shot in the leg and is expected to be okay. But they did say they are still searching for Bennett.

Police reportedly had been looking for Bennett in connection with the homicide of 24-year-old Brittany White.

Police said an Amber Alert was being issued for the 2-month-old, Journei Bennett, before she was found. Officials say a second child was found unharmed at the scene.

Chief Putney says the police department will check to see if changes need to be made to building to increase safety and security, but added that officers can be ambushed anywhere.

Bennett was considered armed and unsafe. He also had a tattoo of a crown with the word "King" on his neck, in the middle of his Adam's apple. Bennett was last seen driving an older white Ford Expedition with NY license plates HUP-3071.

Bennett had been on the run much of the day Thursday after investigators say he killed his wife and kidnapped his 3-month-old child. "I've never seen no aggression out of him", said Rahshawn Johnson.

This marks Charlotte's first homicide of 2018.

Records from the Mecklenburg County Jail show that Bennett has been arrested before and faced charges including communicating threats and assault on a female.
