MetLife said it would stop providing discounts to NRA members for auto and home insurance. The company, which provides cybersecurity solutions worldwide, had been offering discounts on Norton anti-virus and malware protection, cutting prices on its premium package from $110 to $48 for NRA members.
The outcry against the NRA comes a week after the shooting at the Florida high school left 17 dead and multiple others injured.
Insurance firm Chubb also said it had stopped underwriting an NRA-branded insurance policy three months ago. The program that provided coverage for people involved in gun-related incidents or accidents had been under scrutiny by regulators over marketing issues.
The Associated Press reported that MetLife Inc., the insurance company, stopped their NRA discount program, as did software company Symantec Corp. and vehicle rental companies Hertz and Enterprise Holdings. Rental vehicle company Hertz will no longer offer a discount program to NRA members and First National Bank of Omaha said it will not renew a co-branded credit card it has with the NRA.
Bob Spitzer, a political scientist at SUNY Cortland, told the Associated Press that the potential impact on the national gun debate is unclear. Stoneman Douglas shooting survivor Emma Gonzalez was one of the first students to speak directly to President Trump calling him and elected officials out for accepting millions of dollars and for kowtowing to the NRA.
The two moving companies, which are owned by the same parent company, told ThinkProgress on Friday it was ending its relationship with the gun rights organization: "We have asked them to remove our listing from their benefits site", a spokesperson for parent company SIRVA said.
Calls for tighter gun control measures have been rejected by the NRA, which instead pointed the finger at school security, the mental health system and the Federal Bureau of Investigation.
As the public outcry following the Parkland, FL, school shooting continues to build steam, gun control advocates are finding new methods to apply pressure to both politicians and the NRA.
President Donald Trump has aligned himself with the NRA, suggesting some teachers could be armed so that they could fire on any attacker. Among them is Flordia Governor Rick Scott, who supports raising the minimum age for gun purchases from 18-years-old to 21.
The investment company has over $6 trillion in assets under management and is the largest shareholder in major gunmakers such as Sturm Ruger & Co. and American Outdoor Brands. The money is placed in index funds, so Blackrock can not sell shares of individual companies within the index.
