Red Sox sign JD Martinez after long pursuit

Although, the Red Sox have not yet confirmed the deal. But if the Red Sox get that and then some going forward-especially if he stays on the field more-then watch out. Therefore, in theory, it's going to be hard for Martinez to get more money at 32. It's not a report, and it doesn't cite any sources.

Gennett hit.295 previous year and set career bests with 27 homers and 97 RBIs in his first season with the Reds.

Last season was Dyson's only season in Seattle. That comes into play after year two-or, when he will be 32 years old.

That absurd evening of offensive excellence more or less defined Martinez's few months with the D-backs, who acquired him in July from the Tigers.

This offseason, it's less surprising but still a little shocking that Martinez settled for something so low based on what he originally wanted. In 24 games, he hit an unreal.404, eight doubles, 36 RBI's and 26 homeruns.

Martinez hit.303/.376/690 (a career-high slugging percentage) with a 1.066 OPS and a 166+ in 119 games between the Tigers and Diamondbacks in 2017.

On Sunday morning the Boston Red Sox announced that they had signed infielder Eduardo Nunez to a one-year contract through the 2018 season with a player option for the 2019 season.

But despite winning 93 games and the American League East title for a second straight season in 2017, questions were raised about the Red Sox's likability. The team ranked 27th in home runs, last season.

Given time, Martinez might even emerge as a Stanton-sized draw for a franchise that needs an infusion of star power to increase its market share after falling behind the Patriots and, lately, the Celtics in sports-obsessed Boston. Martinez's contract expired at the conclusion of the season and he became a free agent. One man can't fix every issue in that lineup but he'll give them the boost they've been looking for, a step up that they could really use.

The Red Sox are also reportedly working on the assumption they would have to exceed the $197 million luxury tax threshold to sign a big-name free agent.

As Boston looks to move deeper in the postseason during life after David Ortiz, Martinez could be the answer.

The Sox and Martinez have been linked together since the start of the offseason.
