Raj Babbar resigns as UP Congress Chief, say sources

Earlier on Monday, Goa Congress President Shantaram Naik resigned from his post.

Senior political leader Raj Babbar has reportedly stepped down from his post as the President of Uttar Pradesh Congress Committee Wednesday, March 21.

A report on India Today said that till the time Babbar's resignation is confirmed, he will continue working as the state party president.

"I was sent here with a special task", Babbar told reporters, according to News18. "My resignation is to make way for the young leadership to take over", the former MP said. The Congress leader also stated that he has already done all whatever he could do for the Congress party in the state. It is also being said that Congress could appoint a Brahmin face in Babbar's place to counter BJP's attempts at securing non-Yadav and OBC votes.

Jitin Prasad, Rajesh Mishra and Laliteshpati Tripathi were to be considered as possible replacements for Babbar, the report added.

The Congress party seems to have become a game of dominoes with its senior leaders quitting the party back-to-back. "Whatever new positions will be given by party president, we will take them up and work towards 2019". It said that the party may opt to go with one president followed by four vice-presidents to look after the four zones of the state. Firstly, it was his way of accepting responsibility for Congress party's poor performance in recently contested Lok Sabha by polls in Uttar Pradesh. As per his comments, the reports of Babbar's resignation are speculations not fact.
