President Donald Trump announced early Tuesday morning that he had ousted Rex Tillerson from his position as Secretary of State. "He will do a fantastic job!" he tweeted.

U.S. Secretary of State Rex Tillerson speaks to the media during a joint press conference with Kenya's Cabinet Secretary for Foreign Affairs Monica Juma, at a hotel in Nairobi, Kenya Friday, March 9, 2018. Gina Haspel will become the new Director of the Central Intelligence Agency, and the first woman so chosen.

Trump publicly undercut Tillerson's diplomatic initiatives numerous times, including on Monday when the former secretary of state's comments about Russian Federation appeared to be at odds with those of the White House.

Mr Trump thanked Mr Tillerson for his time working for the White House.

The president offered glowing praise for Mr. Pompeo and Ms. Haspel.

Last year, Tillerson said the United States should talk with North Korea, which Trump quickly shot down. "A great deal has been accomplished over the last 14 months, and I wish him and his family well".

"As Director of the CIA, Mike has earned the praise of members in both parties by strengthening our intelligence gathering, modernizing our defensive and offensive capabilities, and building close ties with our friends and allies in the global intelligence community", Trump said.

The move comes less than a week after the Trump administration agreed to a historic meeting with North Korean leader Kim Jong Un.

Ms Haspel in a statement also said she was excited for her promotion.

More on this as it develops.
