UConn earns top overall seed; defending champ South Carolina No. 2 seed

Track the NCAA women's basketball tournament with our printable bracket as all the action unfolds for the next three weeks. After blowing a double-digit fourth-quarter lead to CT (32-0, 16-0 AAC) and losing 100-69 to Louisville, Notre Dame's chances of a top seed looked slim. The Matadors (19-15, 8-8 Big West) upset regular-season champions UC Davis to win the Big West conference and claim a fourth NCAA tournament berth in the program's history, but they have yet to earn a tournament victory. Florida State, Georgia and Duke should also make that corner of the bracket more interesting heading into the regionals weekend. Last season, UConn was the overwhelming favorite but lost to Mississippi State in the Final Four.

"'We felt there was a razor-thin margin between Baylor and Notre Dame, ' said NCAA women's basketball committee chair Rhonda Bennett".

Aside from the favorite to win it all, the Huskies, 63 other teams will try to do what the SC did past year and cut the nets down in Columbus.

The NCAA revealed Sunday night the final eight teams under consideration for the last four spots, and West Virginia ended up among the first four teams out.

In the first and second rounds of the women's tournament, games are played on the home courts of the top 16 seeds.

Defending national champion SC and A'ja Wilson await as a possible Elite Eight matchup for UConn in the Albany Regional.

This year's Final Four is set for Nationwide Arena in Columbus, Ohio, and will get underway on March 30.

There was an outside chance the Notre Dame was not going to get a 1-seed.

The Irish will begin the tournament by hosting No. 16-seed Cal State Northridge in the opening round Friday. Two of those losses came to Louisville. If Notre Dame advances, the Irish would potentially face No. 2 OR if the seeds hold.

The Ducks could stay out west and play in Spokane, where coach Kelly Graves spent many years as Gonzagas coach. The other No. 2 seeds had six (Texas and South Carolina) and four (Oregon) losses, making Baylor's record stand out among its counterparts. The Cardinals open up against Boise State. Thirty-two teams will get automatic bids for winning their conference tournament, and 32 others will receive at-large bids.

Stanford potentially is headed to Lexington for the third straight year if it can advance.

Buffalo, Creighton, Minnesota and Oklahoma were the final teams to get bids to the tournament. "We went through those resumes and their body of work".

Bennett said Oklahomas strength of schedule, which was second best in the country, was a key to its selection.
