House Speaker Paul Ryan on leaving Congress: "Nothing trumps my family"

Detroit Today host Stephen Henderson speaks with Libby Casey, on-air reporter who covers politics and accountability for the Washington Post, about that inflection point: Ryan's retirement, the prospect for Republicans in November, and the potential opportunity for Democrats.

After 20 years in Congress, Ryan noted, he wants to spend more time with his wife and three teenage children. President Trump is attempting to remake the party in his image, an image not in sync with an "establishment" conservative like Ryan - either in demeanor or on key issues such as the Mueller investigation, trade, and immigration.

A six-month budget truce stitched together by Congress in March could unravel if Republican leaders vying to replace US House of Representatives Speaker Paul Ryan indulge party conservatives who want to renege on critical parts of the pact. "I don't like the fact that you feel that way".

Both Democrats and moderate Republicans warned against such an outcome.

"I can't let that happen", he said. I look forward to ensuring the 1st Congressional District continues to be represented by a Republican.

He did not discuss any particular reform details, but the speaker said he discussed Medicare reform with President Donald Trump and has pushed to partially privatize Medicare. He was elected House speaker in 2015 after former House speaker John Boehner retired. Just because he'll be leaving office, Ryan said, doesn't mean he will stop working toward that goal.

Ryan's sudden lame-duck status also could send a shockwave through donor circles that are relying on his leadership at the helm of the House majority.

In Wisconsin, the most likely Republican candidate is state Assembly Speaker Robin Vos, multiple Republicans in the state said. Aides to McCarthy and Scalise declined to immediately provide comment. Bernie Sanders and NARAL Pro-Choice America, faces a Democratic primary challenge from Janesville teacher Cathy Myers. That includes $2.1 million in the first quarter of 2018. The only declared Republicans are Paul Nehlen, who was banned from Twitter earlier this year for posts criticized as racist or anti-Semitic, and Nick Polce, an Army veteran who also co-owns a security consulting firm.

"Despite our differences, I commend his steadfast commitment to our country", she said in a statement.

Ryan's plan to not seek another term as a congressman in Wisconsin may come as a surprise to his constituents in and around his hometown of Janesville. Work requirements are now a mainstay of conservative health policy.
