IPL: Gautam Gambhir steps down as skipper of Delhi Daredevils

Gambhir had a successful run with Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) till last season but this season he finds himself at wrong place.

"I still feel we have the team to turn things around this", he added.

"I take full responsibility for the position we are in".

"True, that I've stepped down from DD captaincy".

"It was absolutely my decision", said Gambhir at a press meet. "It's a decision Gautam took on his own and we salute his contribution and the effort he's taken".

Delhi Daredevils has been at the bottom of the table since the beginning of IPL 2018 with just 2 points in its kitty. Shreyas Iyer will now head the side for the rest of the 2018 Indian Premier League (IPL 2018) season.

Being a leader is not only about walking to flick that coin, or to tinker with fields, it is much more, it is about laying a groundwork and then stepping back, allowing others, the prodigies to take over... all the while being in the background with that beaming smile!

However, after the first match, Gambhir looked a little out of confidence and could manage to score only 30 runs in next five innings. "I've always said I like challenges. I have a lot of respect for him", said the Australian.

When asked about his thoughts on his immediate future with the Daredevils, Gambhir said: "It's too early for me to decide on that". "I was sitting alone and thinking, I couldn't handle the pressure". Still need some time. "Let's talk about DD, and not myself".

Coach Ricky Ponting praised Gambhir for putting team ahead of himself.

"It's my job, it's Gautam's job, it's all the player's job now to make Shreyas' job as easy as possible on the field".

The Daredevils had also named Gambhir, who had represented the Delhi franchisee in the first three years of the IPL, to lead the team.
