Matt Parziale 9-over in his first round at the Masters

Woods' first appearance since 2015 has dominated the build-up to the first major of the year following his encouraging comeback from spinal fusion surgery, but he has work to do to get himself into contention after mixing three birdies with four bogeys.

Leishman birdied three of his first seven holes and finished at 2-under-par 69 while playing alongside the main attraction at the first major of 2018.

The common thought surrounding Rory McIlroy at the Masters is he doesn't play well because of his epic collapse in 2011, in which he recorded the worst final-round score by a third-round leader in Masters history.

For only the fifth time in 79 Masters rounds, Woods failed to make a birdie or better on any of the four par-5 holes.

"I definitely didn't score as well as I played", Woods said on ESPN after his round.

Garcia did at least bounce back with a birdie on the 16th, but an 81 left him 86th in the 87-man field as Tiger Woods rallied to post an opening 73 in pursuit of his 15th major title.

Mickelson missed an 18-foot birdie attempt at No. 17 and then ended the day on a sour note when an 8-foot birdie attempt didn't scare the hole.

The next four shots, though?

Spieth eagled the eighth and fired five birdies in succession on the back nine to card an opening 66 and finish two shots ahead of Finau and Matt Kuchar. "I looked at it as a good thing, because if I'm going to win this on Sunday afternoon I'm going to deal with crowds like that and the energy around the group, so I looked at it more as preparation, as a positive, so hopefully I'll be around Sunday and fighting it out".

Woods somehow managed to salvage a respectable par as he wasted no time in displaying his remarkable powers of recovery.

A three-putt at the 16 stalled the progress he made toward the back end of the round.

"I felt like I hit a lot of good shots and unfortunately the ball just didn't want to stop. Otherwise it's just short right of the green, an easy up-and-down from there, where I was trying to leave it", Woods said after the round. Spieth opened with 64 in his 2015 wire-to-wire victory when he played late and opened up a five-stroke lead after 36 holes. He came into the Masters ranked 101st in par-5 scoring on the PGA Tour in his comeback from spinal fusion surgery previous year.

Player, 82, took the first swing followed by the 78-year-old Nicklaus under a clear, sunny sky with the temperature in the 40s.

Garcia finished the day tied for 85th and beat just one player, amateur Harris Ellis.

It's a tradition, unlike any other: the Masters Tournament in Augusta, Georgia.

It was a record high score at the hole.

Finau dislocated his left ankle celebrating a hole-in-one during the Par-3 Tournament on Wednesday and then popped it back into place.

"It just kind of made me feel weird".

"The people were into it at the very start, even walking to the range where I got a couple of standing ovations".
