PM Modi leaves for five-day visit to Sweden, UK, Germany


At the sidelines of the summit, Prime Minister Modi will have separate bilateral meetings with the Prime Ministers of Denmark, Finland, Iceland and Norway respectively.

The envoy said that India and Sweden will co-chair the first ever Indo-Nordic Summit on Tuesday.

An India-Sweden Business Leaders Roundtable was created in February 2016 during the visit of the Swedish Prime Minister to India, with CII and Sweden-India Business Council as its coordinating agencies.

The first-ever joint meeting between the prime ministers of India, Denmark, Finland, Iceland, Norway and Sweden comes at a critical juncture for the global economy, with the European Union still trying to figure out if it will obtain a permanent exemption from USA tariffs on foreign steel and aluminium.

In a significant development that could cause considerable embarrassment to Prime Minister Narendra Modi ahead of his London trip next week, Indian students in United Kingdom have written to him asking him to first take action in rape cases.

Modi's packed itinerary includes a day of bilateral meetings with Prime Minister Theresa May and others in the British government, and the Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting. The Nordic countries have globally recognised strengths in clean technologies, environmental solutions, ports modernisation, cold-chains, skill development and innovation.

They are demanding answers from Prime Minister Modi about how and why BJP ministers in the Jammu and Kashmir government were standing in support of the rapists of Kathua, and why BJP MLA accused in gang rape case in Unnao, Uttar Pradesh was shielded for so long. This is the first bilateral visit by an Indian premier to the Nordic nation in 30 years.

Under the theme of "Living Bridge", he will also have the opportunity to meet people from various walks of life who have enriched the multi-faceted India-UK relationship.

Earlier, he visited the United Kingdom in November 2015. Nordic competencies fit well with our vision for India's transformation, "the PM said".

The Indian Prime Minister is also scheduled to call on Queen Elizabeth II and interact briefly with CEOs of the two nations who are working on a new agenda of economic partnership.

Breaking protocol, Swedish Prime Minister Stefan Lofven received PM Modi at the airport with a warm handshake.

After Stockholm, Modi travels to London to attend the Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting, where Britain hopes to bolster its trade ties around the world in anticipation of Brexit. The forthcoming visit of Prime Minister Modi's visit to the UK will focus on enhancing India-UK tech partnership.
