Rape cases: Cong to hold candlelight march across Delhi

In Jammu and Kashmir's Kathua, an eight-year-old girl was repeatedly gangraped and later murdered while in Uttar Pradesh's Unnao a teenager has accused a BJP MLA of raping her and the UP government of inaction on her complaint.

In his first comments on the gruesome incidents of rape in Unnao and Kathua, Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Friday called them as a "shame" for the country and asserted that the guilty will not be spared and daughters will get justice.

Breaking his silence, Modi said: "Incidents being discussed for the past couple of days can not be part of a civilised society".

Sources said Congress chief Rahul Gandhi has asked party cadres to organise similar protests on Friday in support of protection of women. Rahul Gandhi¿s sister and brother-in-law Priyanka Gandhi Vadra and Robert Vadra, respectively, have also joined the protest with another prominent leader like Ambika Soni, Shobha Ojha, Ajay Maken and others. Targeting the BJP over the incidents, Congress leader Randeep Surjewala said that Modi government does not deserve to be in power. "We are standing here against that and we want the government to act", he said.

"When we talk about Unnao and Kathua rape cases, you could straight away see the politics in it".

Priyanka Gandhi was heard telling the crowd to respect the cause for which they gathered at the India Gate. "Stop Hindu-Muslim divide over her", the family members said, even though they added that they were scared they would not get justice in the case. "Now, all of you will silently walk", she said.

"Like millions of Indians, my heart hurts tonight", Gandhi wrote on Twitter after addressing an estimated 5,000 people at Thursday's midnight vigil. India simply can not continue to treat its women the way it does.

The kidnap, rape and murder of 8-year-old Asifa Bano in Jammu and Kashmir's Kathua in January 2018, shook the nation and was reported in global media as well. Her body was found in a forest near her home.

Jammu has been on tenterhooks since the brutal rape and murder.

The incident came to light after the victim tried to set herself ablaze outside Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath's residence on Sunday. Recently, the 16-year-old's father died in the police custody after being brutally beaten by the MLA's brother.
