Rick Porcello's start giving Red Sox something to shout about

Major League Baseball announced Thursday that Red Sox pitcher Joe Kelly and Yankees DH Tyler Austin will be suspended for their roles in Wednesday's benches-clearing brawl between the teams.

The drama began early in the game, with Yankees designated hitter Tyler Austin sliding into second base spikes up in the third inning, colliding with Red Sox shortstop Brock Holt.

Porcello was through five innings on just 60 pitches when there was a 45-minute rain delay.

Tyler Austin (5 games) suspended and fined for benches-clearing incident in last night's Red Sox-Yankees game; both will appeal. He recorded a groundout and two strikeouts in the top of the sixth inning to keep the no-hitter going. Giancarlo Stanton followed Judge's double with an infield hit, but Porcello retired Didi Gregorius on a fly ball to right and struck out Gary Sanchez and Aaron Hicks to end the inning.

But the Red Sox, who led 6-0 entering the ninth inning, held on for a 6-3 victory at Fenway Park on Thursday night thanks to strong work by Craig Kimbrel. Nunez and Bradley Jr. led off the third with doubles, with Bradley Jr.'s two-bagger scoring Nunez.

Red Sox: LHP Eduardo Rodriguez (0-0, 7.36 ERA) faces Baltimore RHP Chris Tillman (0-2, 8.68 ERA) in the opener of a four-game series against the Orioles.

The umps ejected Austin, Kelly, Yanks reliever Tommy Kahnle and Yankees third base coach Phil Nevin in an eventual 10-7 NY victory, ESPN reported.

If there was any skepticism over Porcello's strong start due to facing the light-hitting Tampa Bay Rays his first two turns through the rotation, the right-hander put that to rest with his dominant effort against the Yankees.

"I just feel like me", Porcello said. Marcus Walden, pitching in his second inning of relief, loaded the bases with no outs, then Sanchez smacked a three-run double. The last single pitcher to no-hit them was Hoyt Wilhelm on September 20, 1958 in Baltimore.

Perhaps the boldest lesson from this first Red Sox-Yankees meeting of the Alex Cora and Aaron Boone eras is neither team is afraid of confrontation.

Following Benintendi, Mitch Moreland drove in the fourth run with a single to left field. "Scuffling to find the zone, didn't execute very well and made it hard all the way around".

The Red Sox said Ramirez had a contusion on his wrist and X-rays did not indicate a fracture. Mookie Betts led the team with two RBIs, despite going 0-for-4 at the plate.

Later in the game, Red Sox reliever Joe Kelly served up some vigilante baseball justice by nailing Austin in the side with a fastball.
