The university, part of the State University of NY, alerted students to the cancellation hours after an unidentified 19-year-old male freshman was stabbed to death on campus Sunday night.
The unidentified attacker fled on foot.
Engineering student Joao Souza was attacked at about 10:30 p.m. Sunday in a residence suite on the campus near the Pennsylvania state line.
Police searching for the suspect were being aided by forest rangers in wooded areas.
"Law enforcement believes the attack was not a random act and that the victim was targeted", university vice president Brian Rose said. Classes were canceled for the day at BU on Monday, April 16, as a result of the tragedy. The deceased is a male, age 19, in his first year at Binghamton University. The suspect was "described as a light-skinned male wearing dark trousers and a dark, Puma hooded sweatshirt", according to the university, and he "remains at large". "We're an incredible community here at Binghamton, but we've faced tragedy and hardship before in different ways, and we've stuck together and stood by each other". A 22-year-old nursing student named Haley Anderson was killed in her off-campus home in March.
