Syria condemns 'brutal, barbaric aggression' by Western powers

"That is why, with our allies, we ensured that the Russians were notified ahead of time".

At a Pentagon briefing, Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff General Joseph Dunford said the targets included a Syrian research facility and a chemical weapons storage facility.

PARIS, April 14 (Reuters) - The French military targeted Syria's main chemicals research centre and two chemical production facilities overnight, officials said, adding that the air strikes were over but the military was ready to act upon request.

The US, UK and France have launched co-ordinated missile strikes on Syria following a "despicable" chemical weapons attack on the town of Douma.

Worldwide chemical weapons experts were travelling to Syria to investigate an alleged gas attack by government forces on the town of Douma which killed dozens of people. One produces sarin gas and the other is part of a military command post, the officials said. It was done on targets that we believed were selected to hurt the chemical weapons program.

May has repeatedly said that the missile strike on Syria was not about "regime change".

Syria's President Bashar Assad announced that his country would respond to the allied attack but offered no details.

Clearly, a limited strike by the USA and its allies offers the best chance of limiting any retaliation. The base is where planes allegedly had launched chemical attacks.

Other strikes targeted an army depot near Homs.

He added: "This will reduce the regime's ability to further attack the people of Syria with chemical weapons". Chlorine gas is easier to make and nearly as lethal as sarin. "The capital of a sovereign government, trying for years to survive under terrorist aggression, has been attacked", Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova wrote on Facebook. "However, we used a little over double the number of weapons this year than we used last year".

A team of inspectors from the Organization for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons (OPCW) were on route to the site of the alleged attack before the strikes were launched against Damascus and Homs.

However, the Syrian Information Ministry refuted what the Western media presented as United States striking 9 targets, and called on the Syrian people not to pay attention to those media reports aimed at magnifying attack. United Nations investigations blamed at least three of those attacks on the Syrian government - at Khan Sheikhoun, Talmenes and Sarmin.

In his first reaction after military of the three countries carried out strikes against the chemical weapons infrastructure of Syria, Trump declared "Mission Accomplished".

A pro-Syrian official said the Government in Damascus was still assessing the damage, but that advance warning from Russian Federation allowed the timely evacuation of the targeted sites. Russia's ambassador to the United States said Moscow had warned that "such actions will not be left without consequences".
