Tuesday was the first time Piscotty, who missed four games on the bereavement list, had played since his mother's funeral.

Is it dusty in here?

Daniel Mengden started for Oakland and turned in a terrific performance, particularly considering that Boston is averaging 6.7 runs per game at home and hitting.288, both major-league bests. "Probably Gretchen", Oakland manager Bob Melvin said. "The guys just embraced him when he got in the dugout".

Stephen Piscotty put his hand to his heart and crossed home plate, looking up at his mom in heaven. Matt Chapman and Mark Canha had two RBIs apiece for the A's, who took the first two games of the series against the struggling Red Sox. In the ninth, A's closer Blake Treinen gave up his first run in May on an RBI groundout by Mookie Betts before earning his eighth save of the season.

Eduardo Rodriguez (3-1) took his first loss of the season after getting roughed up in the first few innings. The 27-year-old promptly hit a two-out single to center field after acknowledging the crowd's cheers in the second inning of that game.

Athletics: To make room on the roster for Piscotty, Oakland optioned RHP Kendall Graveman to Triple-A Nashville.
