BS Yeddyurappa called to form Govt in Karnataka

According to senior Congress leader DK Shivakumar, party MLAs are in a safe resort. The Congress party polled 13.82 million, 38%, of the votes cast, but won only 78 seats.

In this scenario, the Governor - who has been a Minister in Gujarat when Modi was C.M. - delaying taking any decision also seems to be playing into the hands of BJP, giving them time and space for "Operation Lotus" once again; claim Congress leaders. Governors of these states had first invited BJP to form the government despite not being a largest party. The JD-S won nine.

"If this regional election had resulted in Modi losing, that could have potentially raised the risk of more populist actions", said Aidan Yao, senior emerging Asia economist at Axa Investment Managers in Hong Kong. This is a state in which the party hurled everything but the kitchen sink at the BJP, yet still finds itself at the mercy of a smaller coalition ally.

The first anti-BJP front in 1996 with Deve Gowda as PM, the leader pointed out, was formed after the elections that followed the collapse of Atal Bihari Vajpayee's thirteen-day BJP government.

He said the Congress had extended unconditional support to the JD (S) for forming the government and "we will provide a stable rule for full five years". If Governor decides in favour of Yeddyurappa, huge uproar from JD (S) and Congress is expected since it will be considered as against to the previous precedents set in Goa, Manipur and Meghalaya where the largest coalition is invited to form the government.

Bommai judgement: When no party has numbers. "People are with us", he said. Some 15 plus Congress MLAs are yet to reach Bangalore from their respective constituencies making themselves vulnerable to poaching from the BJP.

"It is not a correct step particularly when the Congress Janata Dal (Secular) combine has very strong numerical strength", he added. The Congress has chose to approach the Supreme Court if the Governor goes along with the BJP, preferring the single largest party without the numbers to the alliance that has a clear majority in the House.

The results are being seen as "the best possible situation in the circumstances" by the Congress and theJD-S as the BJP is short of a majority, but has enough not to go along with the JD-S and its demands that include a government led by Kumaraswamy.

The exact nature of this post-poll coalition will be confirmed once party leaders successfully stake their claim to form the government in front of Governor Vajubhai Vala.

Siddaramaiah is also said to have cited "polarisation" as one of the factors that affected the party's prospects in the May 12 election.

Irrespective of these arguments, the fact remains that all such gubernatorial decisions, Including the crucial one to be taken by the Karnataka governor, can be challenged in court. In the case of a hung Assembly, the leader is asked to prove the majority on the floor of the House within a stipulated time.

Bihar Deputy Chief Minister Sushil Kumar Modi, in a tweet, took shot at Rahul Gandhi saying he played the ultimate "Dalit" card to attract voters but even that failed to give Congress a clear majority.

"The bitter enemies want to come together just for a marriage of convenience".
