Update: Following on from the initial publication of their article, Premiere have updated (via io9) with a clarification from a Lucasfilm rep. Her comment should have read, "We would love to tell a story about Lando Calrissian one day, but it's not relevant", Premiere wrote.
Star Wars fans can catch Glover's Lando in Solo when it opens next week.
Without getting into spoiler territory, Solo does a solid job of introducing Lando Calrissian but does not focus on him or over-explain his mystique.
As it is, Solo: A Star Wars Story, which will launch Glover in the role premiered at the Cannes Film Festival on Tuesday night.
It sounds like the possibility of a series of movies focusing on Han Solo and Chewbacca was long in the works, as cowriter and Star Wars legend Lawrence Kasdan told ComicBook.com last week. Sources close to Lucasfilm tell IndieWire that there are no concrete plans for a Lando standalone film at this time but that the studio is eyeing numerous options for the future.
In the new film, the character is portrayed by Donald Glover and, as stills and trailers reveal, he is a slick-talking maverick whose path crosses with titular hero Han Solo. While many outlets are reporting that the movie will begin shooting in January 2019, Fantha Tracks is reporting that the Obi-Wan movie is now in pre-production and will begin shooting in April 2019, with a December 2020 release date.
It's nearly a no brainer to give the character and actor combination of Lando Calrissian and Donald Glover a shot at headlining a movie sometime down the line.
"I was trying to get them in the movie, you know, very hard", Kasdan told ScreenRant. That being said - where the hell is our Obi Wan/Ewan McGregor movie, Lucasfilm!
There's nothing that Donald Glover isn't capable of right now.
