Two Brazilian legends opened up the main card of UFC 224, as Vitor Belfort had his retirement fight against countryman Lyoto Machida, who entered after defeating highly rated prospect Eryk Anders. Prior to the fight, Belfort prepared for his impending retirement, as he had given much of his life to the sport of mixed martial arts. Lyoto Machida had other plans at UFC 224, however.
For the better part of over 20 years, Belfort (26-14-1) continued to stay among the elite of many weight classes which included heavyweight, light heavyweight and middleweight. Belfort and Machida did battle inside Jeunesse Arena in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.
The finishing kick was eerily similar to the one Machida landed on Randy Couture in what turned out to be the last time "The Natural" stepped foot in an Octagon at UFC 129 in 2011. He did land a head kick with a couple of minutes left in the round.
Both men were tentative in the early going.
Belfort couldn't pick up the win in his final fight, though, as Machida pulled off a flashy finish to get his second win in his last couple of fights.
"First of all, congratulations to Machida's team, they fought pretty well", he said. Especially since the UFC cracked down on testosterone replacement therapy, and steroids, and anything else that might enhance performance that Belfort has very likely already used ten times.
