YouTube to revamp music service, charge more for ad-free shows

YouTube will also be expanding its lineup of original content, like the recently released "Cobra Kai", and Premium users will get access to all of the new content. YouTube Premium will also feature content like "Step Up: High Water", and upcoming series like the sci-fi thriller "Impulse", as well as Liza Koshy's "Liza on Demand".

YouTube Music search works even if fans don't know exactly what they're looking for ... we'll find it if they describe it (try "that hipster song with the whistling") or give us some lyrics (try "I make money moves").

Google's current services for music and video overlap a bit... to say the least.

In addition to YouTube Music Premium, Google is re-branding YouTube Red as YouTube Premium.

YouTube Music is, as the name suggests, a music streaming service that will launch on May 22.

As for Google Play Music, that's sticking around for now.

"YouTube was made for video, not just music", explained Elias Roman, Product Manager, YouTube Music, in a blog post.

A new ad-supported version of Music will be available for free, with a $9.99/month "Music Premium" tier offering ad-free content, background playback, and offline downloads.

There will be a new YouTube Music app, which will feature a personalized home screen which "dynamically adapts to provide recommendations based on people's listening history, where they are and what they're doing".

YouTube has never disclosed how many people subscribe to YouTube Music (or YouTube Red, for that matter), but its subscription music service has largely existed in the shadow of Spotify, the biggest streaming music service with 75 million paying members, and Apple Music, with its closest competitor with 40 million paid subscribers.

YouTube is rolling out a revamped Music app next week as it reconfigures its subscription services.

There's a lot of questions to be answered here about how this affect their Google Play Music streaming service (and their cloud locker), as well as Family Plan users signed up for YouTube Red and we're going to have to wait for Google to answer them when they launch the service next week. As for its ad removal, YouTube premium removes all traces of them from any and all videos.

Starting Tuesday, the new YouTube Music will be available in the U.S., Australia, New Zealand, Mexico and South Korea.

YouTube Music is getting an overhaul, which an emphasis on personalization. It will expand more broadly in the coming weeks.

Last year Google confirmed the engineering teams working on Google Play Music and YouTube Music had joined forces, and it seems likely that we'll eventually see everything that you can buy digitally from Google rolled into YouTube - music, movies, TV shows, and so on, though that's just speculation for now.
