A senior Russian lawmaker advised Russian women Wednesday to be vigilant during any romantic encounters with foreign fans flocking to Russia for the World Cup so as not to end up raising their children alone.
The 2018 World Cup in Russian Federation kicks off Thursday, and while most of us will be focused on cheering for our favorite teams, local women are being advised to keep something else in mind: don't have sex with foreigners.
'It's the children who suffer. and have suffered since the Soviet era.
She spoke in response to a question from a radio station about the so-called "Children of the Olympics" after the Moscow Games in 1980, a time when contraception was not widely available in the country.
"We must give birth to our children".
"It's one thing if they're of the same race but quite another if they're of a different race. It's lucky if they're the same race (as the mother) but if they're of another race, it's worse", she said, adding "I'm not a nationalist".
Urging women to marry "Russian citizens" instead, she said that children risked being "abandoned and just left with their mother" or being taken overseas by their fathers.
"Then they come to me at the committee and cry that the child was taken away, removed, and so forth. I know that the children suffer as well, and then they are abandoned and stay here with the mother", she said in comments published on Monday.
"I would like to see people in our country to get married for love".
Couples should 'both be citizens of Russian Federation who build a good family, live peacefully and in a friendly way and bring up children together, ' she went on.
Her comments drew criticism and ridicule.
Perhaps she was anxious that the women would face a future of single parenthood, but then the lawmaker said that it would be fine if they slept with foreigners who were the same race. Why should we copy everything?
Another lawmaker said foreign fans could bring viruses to the World Cup and infect Russians.
