A source has since told The Sun Online: "Duty of care is the most important consideration on shows like this and as soon as he felt unwell, ITV would have had a discussion with him about leaving". Magazine reports, it is now unclear whether Niall has taken back control of his social media accounts, as the Islanders' families and friends usually run them while they are starring on the reality dating show.

Megan Barton has set pulses racing as she has joined the Love Island villa.

On Tuesday evening, Niall's pals came forward to claim that they hadn't heard from him since news broke that he'd quit the show, and they knew as little as everybody else.

Second said Niall's friends were just as stunned as fans by the dramatic news.

Hardcore fans have been sharing their thoughts on Twitter and while it's probably just the usual speculation that occurs when a contestant exits a reality show without warning, fans are intrigued nonetheless.

"He is really popular as he's a lovely boy".

When contacted for comment by The Bite, an ITV spokesperson said: "Niall has left the villa for personal reasons and will not be returning to the show".

The 23-year-old was one of the favourites to win the show thanks to his cheeky persona and Harry Potter references, but it was revealed yesterday - hours before the show aired - that he'd left the villa for "personal reasons".

He later said in the Beach Hut: "I'm obviously sad that Niall's left the villa". We got on really well.

Taken aback by his sudden departure, Dr Alex admitted Niall will be missed by all as he reiterated how much of a "great guy" he is. "He was actually my friend, my buddy".

Initially, Niall paired up with Kendall Rae-Knight, 26, before newcomer Adam Collard, 22, stole her away from him in the first week.

The news will be revealed to the other Islanders on Tuesday's episode of the ten-week series by fellow participant, Alex. "Far too excited when the new boys came in".
