The new Duchess of Sussex's father spoke to Piers Morgan in an interview with Good Morning Britain about his disappointment at missing the royal wedding, which he was too ill to attend following heart surgery, and the phone call he had with his now son-in-law.
Thomas Markle said he regretted not being able to walk his daughter down the aisle himself, but tuned in as she married into the royal family on May 19, he told "Good Morning Britain". Revealing that he'd told Meghan and Harry that he wasn't going to their wedding in a phone call, Thomas recounted, "They were disappointed ... and they both said, 'Take care of yourself, we are really anxious about you'".
"I was complaining I didn't like Donald Trump, he said, "Give Donald Trump a chance", continued Thomas. I was jealous, I wish I'd been there, I wish it'd been me, but thank God he was there.
He also revealed how Meghan told him she was dating Prince Harry. The British royal family is famous for never publicly expressing their political beliefs. "My ex-wife is a handsome woman". Harry asked for her hand over the phone and I said, 'You're a gentleman.
He also recalled Harry formally asking him for his daughter's hand in marriage, saying he made Harry give a promise over the phone.
Since Thomas had to drop out, Harry's dad, Prince Charles, walked the gorgeous bride down the aisle instead, which Thomas said was an honor. "I was telling him how unhappy I was with the president, with the idea of Trump", he said. "I couldn't have been more proud", he said. I was presented as a hermit hiding out in Mexico but obviously that was a mistake and went wrong. And like I said, how could I ask for a better replacement than Charles?
Talking about the moment he told his daughter and her husband-to-be that he would not make the wedding, Markle said, "They were disappointed".
When asked if he thought Prince Harry was a "Trump supporter", Markle said: "I would hope not now but at the time he might have been". "So that upsets me somewhat". "And when she met Harry and she spoke about how much she loves him, there's gotta be a child in the making soon".
"I've always have a bad attitude about Donald Trump, and that's never going to change", Thomas Markle said.
"I think he (the Duke of Sussex) was open to the experiment".
Queen Elizabeth now holds the crown and her oldest son Prince Charles is first in line for succession.
