With spirits high as their national team opened the World Cup in Russia Thursday, Saudi Arabian soccer fans said they would be open to the prospect of playing against Israel in the future, as Israel's Foreign Ministry spokesman wished the gulf kingdom luck in the global soccer tournament.

"We brought them the best technical support, a team of the highest level and we paid them for three years".

The game itself is a clash of two nations with little history in the game and are coming into the tournament on the back poor runs.

Russia, the lowest ranked team in the tournament have not won a single World Cup match since 2002.

But after Iury Gazinsky scored the first goal of this World Cup to give Russian Federation the lead in the 12th minute, a home win was never in doubt, and the feelgood factor this result will now generate is crucial for the tournament as a whole.

Saudi Arabia are led by coach Juan Antonio Pizzi, yet he faces an nearly impossible challenge of piecing together a team ready for World Cup action as most of his players are based in a domestic league that lacks quality.

Villain Russian President Vladimir Putin opened the tournament by welcoming fans to "open, hospitable and friendly" Russia. Russia's win was also the biggest in a World Cup opener in 84 years since Italy's 7-1 over the United States in 1934.

Putin told the 80,000-strong crowd at the Luzhniki Stadium before the match kicked off: "I congratulate all of you at the start of the most important championship in the world".

"I watched Egypt's game against Uruguay".
