The Stranger Things actress deleted her account on Wednesday after becoming the target of a wave of satirically homophobic memes. Under the hashtag #takedownmilliebobbybrown, users have been posting fake stories of encounters with the actor, suggesting she used homophobic slurs against them.
It's safe to assume that the tirade against Brown was timed to coincide with pride week in an effort to attack the young star's character.
Millie Bobby Brown deactivated her Twitter account Tuesday after Photoshopped images of her went viral for all the wrong reasons. While numerous tweets directed at the actress have since been deleted, the tweets were said to have tried to label Brown as a violent homophobe by adding homophobic statements and slurs to her photos.
The actress, who was one of the first recipients of MTV's gender-neutral award previous year, is a vocal anti-bullying advocate and LGBT rights supporter who has publicly voiced her support for GLAAD's Together movement as well as Parkland shooting survivors.
Twitter linked numerous memes back to people in the LGBTQ community, further suggesting the posts are dark humor rather than real vitriol.
