Former Northern Iowa basketball player Nick Nurse is going to be the new head coach of the NBA's Toronto Raptors, according to ESPN's Adrain Wojnarowski.

Toronto Raptors assistant coach Nick Nurse gestures during a game against the Detroit Pistons on February 29, 2016.

In 2007, he became the head coach of the Iowa Energy in the then-NBA D-League, and was a coach in that league until 2013 when he became a Raptors assistant.

Nurse has spent the past five seasons as an assistant coach with the Raptors under Casey.

In charge of the Raptors' offence, Nurse played a pivotal role in successfully reinventing the way the team played last season.

Toronto's coaching search reportedly had narrowed down to Nurse and San Antonio assistant coach Ettore Messina.

Casey was sacked last month and was hired by the Detroit Pistons on Monday.

Nurse coached in Europe for 11 years starting in 1996.

Casey, meanwhile, has already found his next job: with the Detroit Pistons. He also won a pair of titles in the G League with two different teams and was coach of the year there, too. During his seven-year tenure, Casey went 320-238 (.573). He is the franchise's all-time leader in wins, winning percentage, games coached and playoff games coached (51).

"I leave here with my head high", he told TSN via text message in May.
