Another House race worth watching is in SC, where Archie Parnell is poised to win the Democratic primary in the 5th District despite admitting to domestic abuse in the 1970s.

As S.C. governor, his rigid ideological conservatism made him a favorite of tea party Republicans while putting him at odds with state lawmakers over spending. He is the second House Republican to lose a primary this election cycle. On Tuesday, Virginia GOP primary voters ended up nominating a former Trump official who has defended Confederate symbols, Corey Stewart, to challenge Kaine.

Female candidates: By now, a trend is firmly established.

AP also projects Charleston attorney Joe Cunningham will be the Democratic nominee in the 1st District.

Polls have closed in both states and well as Maine, North Dakota and Nevada.

Sanford has been among Trump's most vocal GOP critics in Congress. Nevada, North Dakota, Maine and Virginia also chose candidates for the midterm election on November 6, when Democrats hope to capture a majority of the U.S. Congress.

In any event, the fact that Sanford has at times been at odds with Trump is what made Arrington such a strong challenger in the first place. It was helping her gain traction even before Trump sent that tweet. The president took note of his last-minute intervention in the race. Congrats to Katie Arrington!

Earlier in the day, Trump frenemy Sen. The refers to 2009, when Sanford's aides said he was hiking the Appalachian Trail while he actually visited a woman with whom he was having an affair in Argentina.

Tweeting from the plane bringing him home from Singapore, he declared Sanford "very unhelpful" in advancing his agenda.

"Mark Sanford and the career politicians cheated on us", she said in one ad, complaining that Sanford makes it a habit to "go on CNN to bash President Trump". Later, Sanford admitted he was involved in an extramarital affair in Argentina. "She is tough on crime and will continue our fight to lower taxes".

While Sanford's defiance of Trump cost him, Virginia congresswoman Barbara Comstock handily won her primary against a more conservative candidate who accused her of being a "Never Trumper".

Sanford addressed Trump's tweet Tuesday night, saying it's "fairly unusual" for a president to weigh in as Trump did and saying he's "neither for nor against Trump", but instead bases his decisions and comments on his political values. "I strongly endorse Adam Laxalt for Governor of Nevada", he tweeted.

One of the most interesting GOP primaries in Nevada involves legal brothel owner Dennis Hof challenging GOP state Rep. James Oscarson for his seat in the statehouse.

State Senator Jennifer Wexton won the Democratic nomination in the state's 10th district, which includes parts of Northern Virginia. In Alabama, U.S. Rep. Martha Roby is in a July 17 runoff against former congressman Bobby Bright.

That result would lead to a runoff between McMaster and Warren, with Catherine Templeton eliminated on 20 percent of the vote. Luria, a Navy veteran and businesswoman, was her party's pick in the contest for the seat held by Republican Representative Scott Taylor, who's a former Navy SEAL.

Sanford previously represented the coastal district from 1995 to 2001.
