The comedy crown usually stored in the "Veep" trophy cabinet went this year to "Atlanta", the FX comedy created by and starring Donald Glover, which amassed 16 nods.
NBC's "This Is Us", the show about a multicultural family that premiered to huge critical acclaim past year, received its second nomination for drama series.
It was a very strong freshman class, and all five shows are back this year.
Netflix just broke HBO's 17-year streak as the network with the most Emmy nominations - the streaming service was nominated for a whopping 112 awards at this year's ceremony while HBO sits at a still-respectable 108. Netflix's most nominated show was "The Crown" with 13, including for best drama series. This is the first time either of the stars have hosted the show, which is also being executive produced by Lorne Michaels.
Top of the Lake: China Girl, shot in Sydney, also missed out in other categories, including best limited TV series, while lead actress Elisabeth Moss failed to earn a nomination.
It was a deep year of nominations for minority performers, who accounted for over one-third of Thursday's acting nominees. Issa Rae became a first-time nominee for her role in "Insecure", while Rachel Brosnahan (Lead Actress in a Comedy for "The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel") and Bill Hader (Lead Actor in a Comedy for "Barry") are first-time nominees for their categories. Hulu's "The Handmaid's Tale" comes in second with 20 nominations.
Add up all the award nominations and Netflix is now the top Emmy nominated "network", a term that we can now apply in the loosest of terms.
