Lionel Messi breaks Barcelona trophy record with Spanish Super Cup title

It was Barcelona's 13th Supercup and sixth in the last nine seasons.

NAIJ.com previously reported that Lionel Messi has been named Barcelona captain following Andres Iniesta's exit from Camp Nou.

Africa may be unfamiliar surroundings for Barcelona - but they will glimpse the familiar sight of silverware should everything go according to plan against Sevilla.

But Gerard Pique levelled from close range and Ousmane Dembele then fired Barca into the lead.

That set the stage for French star Dembele to take the headlines with a 78th-minute screamer from 25 yards and again Messi played a crucial role with the key pass.

But Ben Yedder hit a weak penalty which was easily saved by Ter Stegen.

There was still time for late drama when Barca goalkeeper Marc-Andre Ter Stegen brought down Aleix Vidal in the area as the Sevilla youngster closed in on an equaliser.

Per the La Liga rulebook, which was thought to be applied to Sunday's game, clubs are only allowed to name three non-EU players in their matchday squad.

Dembele scored the victor in the 78th minute after Gerard Pique had cancelled out Pablo Sarabia's opener as Barca beat Sevilla 2-1 in Tangier, Morocco.

"It has stated that as many non-EU players as desired can be registered, despite the fact that in their last notice for the 18/19 season, only three were due to be permitted, without exception".

The Spanish Super Cup preceeds every La Liga opener and the match it is between La Liga champions against the Copa del Rey winners, but since Barcelona won the domestic double last season, Sevilla qualify as Copa del Rey runners-up.

The 21-year-old winger was signed in a surprise £36.5 million deal from Bordeaux this summer and was expected to make his official debut against Sevilla.

Club captain Lionel Messi and forward Luis Suarez already have European Union citizenship, while Brazilian Philippe Coutinho is thought to have obtained a Portuguese passport through his wife, Aine.
