Seeing his side pick up an important 2-1 opening day win against an impressive Leicester City side, Mourinho was quick to praise everyone from Paul Pogba to Luke Shaw; congratulating them on giving what they could to the cause, for as long as they could.
"In the periods Leicester were stronger we played as a team and coped well".
But there is something brewing behind the scenes and there has been for some time after Mourinho left Pogba out of the team on multiple occasions last season and publicly criticized him.
After describing himself as more of a head coach than a manager nowadays, the Red Devils boss refused to brand his side title challengers just yet.
The two-time Champions League victor added: "At this point I'd just say we need to win".
Mourinho's relationship with Pogba has attracted as much attention as his dealings with executive vice-chairman Ed Woodward in recent months, but events at Old Trafford appeared to be restorative. It was a good match with three good teams, in my opinion.
'Paul was fantastic. His contribution was awesome. Andreas Pereira comes from the Valencia bench as a winger to play No.6, Fred (has had) 10 days training (and comes from) the Ukrainian league direct to Old Trafford. We thought [he could play a] maximum 60 minutes, but he managed 80.
He added: "The thinking is he is a very good penalty taker and likes the responsibility of it and he is first choice". A match where I needed six changes not three, [Three] weren't enough for me.
'Of course, we have second or third choice in case he is not confident or for some reason doesn't want to take it.
"[Kasper] Schmeichel is very good on pens but no chance".
