32 killed, 128 injured in attack on protesters

At least 15 people were confirmed dead as a suicide bomber targeted a protest demonstration in the eastern Nangarhar province on Tuesday, an eyewitness said.

Gen. Ghulam Sanayee Stanikzai, police chief of Nangarhar province, said people from Achin district had come to the Momandara district to block the main highway between the capital Jalalabad and the Torkham border with Pakistan.

A delegation from Kabul is heading to the province to probe the attack with a focus on its motive and if there is a connection to the local police commander Bilal Shah, a provincial official said by phone on condition of anonymity because of the sensitivity of the situation. The Taliban has denied involvement.

A minimum of 50 people died in a bomb explosion in Afghanistan's eastern Nangarhar province on Tuesday, TOLONews channel reported in Twitter quoting a deputy president of the provincial Council.

Afghan president Ashraf Ghani strongly condemned the suicide attack against the demonstrators in Nangarhar.

Attahullah Khogyani, spokesman for the provincial governor, said 165 others were wounded in the attack a day earlier.

According to a united Nations report published in mid-July, the number of civilians killed in Afghanistan in the first six months of the year reached a record high of almost 1,700 dead, due in majority to the attacks of the AES, the worst record in ten years, according to the UN.
