Given the relentlessness of old age, there's also the possibility that one of the main characters' senior parents can bite the dust, like Phil's father Frank (played by Fred Willard).

The five-time best comedy series Emmy victor stars Ed O'Neill, Sofia Veragra, Ty Burrell, Julie Bowen, Jesse Tyler Ferguson, Eric Stonestreet, Ariel Winter, Sarah Hyland, Rico Rodriguez, Nolan Gould, Aubrey Anderson-Emmons, and Jeremy Maguire.

"Modern Family", which won the Emmy for outstanding comedy five straight times at one point (but is not up for the award at Monday's ceremony), is a large ensemble comedy.

There is going to be a major death on the upcoming 10th season of Modern Family.

Modern Family airs on Sky1 in the UK.

Fans have taken to Twitter to speculate on who the character is. "We do deal with a death. and on television, it's not easy to do because that's a heavy subject", he says. "But at the same time, it would seem unusual for a family not to go through it".

Roseanne Conner isn't the only character on the proverbial chopping block this season.

DeDe Pritchett has long butted heads with her kids, Claire and Mitchell, and has a complicated history with her ex-husband Jay and his second wife, Gloria. Ahead of the episode, Ed O'Neill, who plays patriarch Jay Pritchett on the show, told ABC News the finale would involve "a death, which doesn't seem like it's amusing, but it's a very amusing show and it's a very touching show".

Well, that'll be the joy of discovery that awaits you when Modern Family kicks off season 10 on September 26 at 9 p.m. ET/PT.
