President Weah makes surprise return against Nigeria

Former Fifa World Player of the Year and current president of Liberia, George Weah, played for his country in an global friendly on Tuesday against Nigeria, despite being 51.

Liberia had arranged the friendly to retire the No. 14 jersey made famous by Weah but fans were in for a shock when, 16 years after his last worldwide appearance, the former Paris Saint-Germain and AC Milan striker led the national team onto the pitch wearing it instead.

Federation Internationale de Football Association made similar comments when asked if Weah, World Footballer of the Year in 1995, had made history.

Weah's popularity from his playing career saw him secure a landslide win last December in Liberia's presidential elections.

George Weah played 79 minutes in his team's loss. I looked up to the likes of Stephen Keshi, Rashidi Yekini, Friday Ekpo and others and believed that the African footballer can also get to the very top. I believe that in Africa, somewhere, there is another Ballon D'Or victor. "We have to find him, expose him to the world and give him the opportunity to actualise his dream". The game had been arranged to honor him and retire his number 14 shirt.

Etebo took the corner from which Simeon Nwankwo headed Nigeria into a 2-0 lead after Henry Onyekuru - on loan at Galatasaray from Everton - had scored the opener.

In his playing days, Weah was an inspiration to young Africans who watched the Liberian in the colours of AC Milan, Paris Saint-Germain or even in his twilight at Chelsea.
