Real Madrid ready to sign Ajax star Frenkie de Jong

According to Don Balon, senior players in the Barca squad, including Philippe Coutinho, are aware that the La Liga champions are pushing to get a deal in place in the coming weeks which will see De Jong join them ahead of next season as they look to fend off stiff competition for his signature.

Barça reportedly had a bid of €25-30m rejected by the Eredivisie club, and Spurs were also given a short shrift when they offered closer to €50m for the 21-year-old's services.

But was it really impossible for a big club like Barcelona to rope in the Dutch worldwide this summer?

"Barcelona may return for Frenkie in January, but players will not leave in that period".

During the last summer transfer, Barcelona were said to have had their bid turned down by Ajax chiefs, although the Catalan giants will still go again when the January transfer window opens.

Ajax have issued Barcelona a hands-off warning by reiterating that Frenkie de Jong is not for sale.

Barcelona and Tottenham Hotspur will meet in the Champions League later this season, and it might not be the only time they do battle in the near future.

De Jong has been linked with Tottenham and Barcelona, but Wijnaldum has urged him not to rush things.

"Maybe someday I'll join Barcelona, but not this season", he told NOS.

De Jong began his career with Willem II Tilburg in 2015, making his debut against FC Den Haag in May of that year. De Jong has also guided AFC Ajax in the Europa League Final in 2017.

De Jong's stock has continued to rise in the Netherlands, and he has won two caps for his country, and is closing in on a half-century of appearances for the capital club.
