Mega Millions and Powerball lotteries now have $1 billion combined jackpot

The Illinois Lottery announced it's giving out 654 free tickets from 10 a.m.to 1 p.m. Tuesday at Schnuck's in Springfield.

Between Tuesday night's Mega Millions jackpot and the prize for the following night's Powerball game - more than $1 billion is up for grabs.

If you beat those odds, there's also a chance someone else will have bought a winning ticket and you'll have to split your prize.

There is no need to travel to the United States to play the Mega Millions lottery or take a chance on winning Powerball.

Players need to purchase their tickets by 6:59 p.m. tonight in order to be eligible for the record-breaking Mega Millions jackpot.

The chances of winning the third largest grand prize in US history are one in 88 quadrillion. The odds of matching all six numbers in the Mega Millions drawing are one in 302.5 million. About half of the jackpot winnings would go to taxes.

There were no winners in Saturday night's Powerball drawing, so the next drawing, scheduled for Wednesday, will be worth an estimated $345 million, Powerball officials said.

Tickets for the lottery are sold for $2 each in kiosks, supermarkets and gas stations in 44 US states, the District of Columbia and the Virgin Islands.

"It's always a thrill to have both jackpots rolling, but there's an extra spark now with Mega Millions reaching a new record", Gordon Medenica, Mega Millions lead director and Maryland's lottery and gaming director said in a statement on Tuesday.

The $667 million jackpot refers to the annuity option, paid out over 29 years.
