The day after Republicans expanded their control of the Senate while losing the House, Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell warned Democrats against aggressively going after President Donald Trump.

"They did very poorly", Mr Trump told reporters.

But Trump is not most presidents, and after making a gesture of decency, praising would-be House speaker Nancy Pelosi, he reverted back to his combative and confrontational mode in a freakish press conference in which he threatened to adopt a "warlike posture" against Democrats if they used their newfound power at the House to investigate his financial and political dealings.

An expanded majority in the Senate will allow Republicans to continue confirming Trump's nominees to key posts. According to the latest media reports, Republicans hold a 52-44 seat majority in the Senate. Trump and his daughter Ivanka, a senior White House adviser, both retained their stakes in the property.

Rep. Peter Welch speaks at the Democratic election night party Tuesday. "She has earned this great honor!"

And she could play the same role for Trump as he campaigns for reelection in 2020, giving him someone to play off against in legislative battles. He has professed that he has no burning desire to run for president, but Clinton vetted him as a running mate and he could fit well with potential 2020 candidates such as California Sen. But there is no equivalent to Stephen Miller or Peter Navarro on the foreign policy front, translating Trump's America First speeches into an even partial break with the national security status quo.

Democrats say that when it comes to the administration's response, for example, to the "caravan" of Central American immigrants, they want answers about the rationale behind the troop deployments and details on the force's rules of engagement.

She added: 'It's what I anticipate, I expect and what I thrive on'. If they give her a hard time, perhaps we will add some Republican votes.

Any investigation of the president is likely to face the same fate as that of the Russian Federation investigation by special counsel Robert Mueller.

The area's white and vastly rural profile outside Cincinnati is part of what is expected to keep OH from springing back easily for Democrats, Hamilton County Republican Chairman Alex Triantafilou said.

They have said they might do this because during the 2016 presidential campaign, Mr Trump became one of the only presidential candidates in recent history who refused to release his tax returns.

"The question for me on this whole leadership issue is not who leads us, it's more a question of how we're led", the six-term Democratic congressman said in an interview Wednesday. "Two can play that game!" "His numbers went up and ours went down, and we under-performed in the next election". The majority party in the House controls nearly all of the subpoena power and other investigative tools.

Mr Trump was expected to further address the results at a White House news conference later on Wednesday. But becoming speaker requires a majority of the full House, 218 votes, and her slim majority - now at 222 - leaves her little cushion.

If Nancy Pelosi hopes to unite an ideologically and strategically combative Democratic Caucus and become the next speaker of the House, she must organize a leadership team that recognizes the generational shift this election has highlighted, and she must empower that team to amplify a coherent message about what a Democratic House is capable of accomplishing.

The shifts from Republican to Democrat were substantial in many of those districts. "It's about restoring the constitution's checks and balances to the Trump administration", she told a news conference.

"The midterm elections saw women securing historic firsts around the country, from the first Native American women to join the House of Representatives to Tennessee electing a woman to the Senate for the first time", it said.

"I assume that there would be some sort of a court case, but we'd have to wait and see", he said.

Republicans in Arizona celebrated the Senate remaining in their hands. At the Hilton DoubleTree Resort, music blared from the hall and smiles were etched on faces. They have a very long list of topics they plan to look into, including financial deregulation, Trump's business interests and Russia's election interference.

Yet House results show the changing patterns in suburban America, even in some places where the statewide contests went against them. "That's a firewall", GOP volunteer James Murr said.

The biggest problem with this sort of analysis is that the Democrats.won most of yesterday's Senate races.
