McCarthy had faced a long-shot challenge from Rep. Jim Jordan of OH, the co-founder of the conservative Freedom Caucus.
Trump and McCarthy have spoken about leadership races recently, territory that Presidents usually avoid so not as to seem like they're alienating members of their own party. He won by 159-43 among House Republicans.
While the faces of Democratic Senate leadership remained largely the same, Republicans saw a shake-up due to term limits and retirements.
McConnell has reportedly wanted to add a woman to the Senate leadership team for a while after facing criticism previous year over the lack of a woman on the team since Sen.
"Unless it is a miracle, we are going to vote against them", Mr. Palmer said. Those districts figured prominently in the party's national take back of the House.
Trump, who is close to McCarthy but also friendly with Jordan, largely stayed on the sidelines in the intraparty House contest. Charles Grassley was nominated Wednesday to a high-ranking position that would put him third in line for the presidency.
Jordan, a pugnacious conservative and former Division I college wrestling champion, ran against McCarthy -- and the current slate of GOP leaders. John Thune was promoted to party whip, Wyoming Sen.
The No. 2 spot of House minority whip was claimed by Representative Steve Scalise. The Democrats who oppose Pelosi have said they plan to circulate a letter with the number of necessary signatures showing she doesn't have the votes to be Speaker, but they have not done so yet.
Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell, R-Ky., center, is flanked by Rep. Marsha Blackburn, R-Tenn., left, the senator-elect from Tennessee, and Florida Gov. Rick Scott, the Republican candidate in the undecided challenge to incumbent Sen. Both were selected by acclamation. Nebraska Sen. Deb Fischer also was vying for the job as vice chair of the Senate Republican conference.
In a conference call with Iowa reporters, Grassley said the election of himself and Ernst was believed to be the first time Iowa's senators were chosen for leadership roles in the majority party at the same time.
Ernst is the first woman in eight years to have a spot amongst the Senate GOP leadership. As of Wednesday afternoon it was not clear where Jordan or Meadows would land.
At that point, McCarthy was running for speaker, but ran into opposition from the hard-line Freedom Caucus and withdrew his name for consideration.
The leadership election comes as incoming freshmen lawmakers are in town for orientation.
Many Republicans side with Jordan's theory, which is that Republicans, despite a GOP monopoly on power in Washington, lost because they didn't "do what we said" - including delivering Trump's priority to build the border wall with Mexico.
