De Minaur downs fresher Seppi to win Sydney International title

The men's final will still go ahead as planned on Saturday night, meaning either Simon or De Minaur will have to play two matches in one day when the victor meets Andreas Seppi in the decider.

Petra Kvitova of the Czech Republic kisses the trophy during the awarding ceremony of the women's final against Ashleigh Barty of Australia at the Sydney International tennis tournament in Sydney, Australia, Jan. 12, 2019.

The 19-year-old proved his burgeoning reputation as a fighter is deserved and he never looked in danger of suffering a repeat of last year's disappointment as he became the first Australian to lift the title since Bernard Tomic in 2013.

Overjoyed by the experience, the world number 29 told reporters after the match, "it's surreal". "I'm just happy that I was able to get the win and be the next Aussie to get the win, especially at home". All Australians, you ask any one of them, it's spine-tingling at times.

After Barty shot out of the blocks in the first set and led the deciding set 3-0, world No.8 Kvitova fought back time and time again in the 2hr 19min classic while battling fatigue to claim her second Sydney crown.

"I wasn't doing too well in the pro circuit and ended up going to Vandy and definitely the coaches there took me under their wing and developed me for a good four, five years", Sharma said. I sought clarification with Craig Tiley (Australian Open tournament director) yesterday with regards to it and he explained how he made that decision because they wanted their defending champions playing on the first night and that's not unusual that's what happens at Wimbledon aswell, Alex has accepted that and he's ready to go today.

"I left everything out there".

"It took me a little to get used to conditions out here", Barty said. I feel like I'm playing great tennis. "It's been tough, because I have played a couple of finals and things haven't gone my way".

Considered somewhat of a warm up to the Australian Open in Melbourne next week, the finalists will now make the trip south to battle it out for the prestigious Grand Slam.
