Rahul Dravid's influence helped my batting evolve: Shubman Gill

Mumbai: Shubman Gill was surprised when BCCI announced his name as replacement for suspended KL Rahul late Saturday night. In Ranji Trophy also, I had bowled a lot this season.

The sudden vacancies in the squad have meant Gill could make Yuvraj's prediction come much sooner.

"While batting at No. 5, in all these matches when I was going into bat, we required 150 to 160 runs and it was very important that I paced the innings well and played the role of a finisher", Shankar explained.

His sequence of scores this season are 56, 54*, 62, 268, 10, 148, 24, 69*, 91, 8. In another game, I scored 60 odd in a chase. "I hope to cement my berth and serve the country for a long time", Shubman said in an interview after a nets session organised at his uncle's house in Mohali. He is very exciting. Prime example is Rishabh Pant. "He has displayed his best form in the last two years and the selection for the Indian team feels special for the whole family and friends", said Khushpreet whom Shubman calls his elder brother. But after one year of being in and out, after one IPL, he has now two Test hundreds overseas. And, if one looks at their still frames after the shots have been executed, it seems they are mirror images.

"My father owns agricultural lands in Fazilka (Punjab)".

He was awarded the best Under-16 cricketer award from the BCCI in 2014-15 and 2015-2016 for his consistency, which also earned him a stint at the National Cricket Academy where he worked alongside Amol Muzumdar.

While he was bowling four to five overs per match during Vijay Hazare Trophy, he has bowled more overs in Ranji Trophy. Successful U-19 series' against England both at home and away further made him the talk of the town and the icing on the cake was his performance at the U-19 World Cup 2018.

He credits Rahul Dravid hugely for his success.

India ODI squad to tour New Zealand: Virat Kohli (captain), Rohit Sharma (vice-captain), Shubman Gill, Shikhar Dhawan, Ambati Rayudu, Dinesh Karthik, Kedar Jadhav, MS Dhoni, Vijay Shankar, Kuldeep Yadav, Yuzvendra Chahal, Ravindra Jadeja, Bhuvneshwar Kumar, Mohammed Siraj, Khaleel Ahmed, Mohammed Shami.

Whether he gets a chance to display his prowess in the senior side immediately remains to be seen but one thing is for certain, this 19-year-old lad is one for the future.
