National Basketball Association free agency rumors: Knicks releasing center Enes Kanter

The annual National Basketball Association franchise value list was released by Forbes on Wednesday, and the New York Knicks top the list. "He is a courageous individual and we thank him for his many contributions both on the court and in the community".

The team issued a waiver for Kanter, and one of his representatives told The New York Post they were working on a "separation" deal in which the team would work on a buyout with the player.

The Knicks have been trying to move Kanter for a few weeks, but his contract made things hard, according to the report.

The 26-year-old, 6-11 center who spent a season practicing with Kentucky in 2010-11 even though the NCAA ruled him ineligible to play, got waived by the Knicks after Thursday's trading deadline.

Kanter, a vocal critic of Turkey President Recep Tayyip Erdogan and the Turkish government, skipped the Knicks' game in London last month over fears for his safety. He averaged 13.1 points in 44 starts for the Mavericks this season, his 10th in the league. Smith an intriguing player, but still unproven with an interesting upside and visible downside.

Enes Kanter and the Knicks could be headed toward a contract buyout.

NY didn't execute any trades before Thursday's deadline. Additionally, Kanter will become an unrestricted free agent this summer.

Kanter can score. He averaged 14.5 points and 10 rebounds a game, he does most of his damage around the basket (61.5 percent of his shots came in the restricted area) but he has to be guarded at the arc.
