Don't panic... But Facebook and Instagram are down

"We're aware that some people are now having trouble accessing the Facebook family of apps", a Facebook spokesperson said on Twitter at 10:49 a.m. ET.

That said, you may be be experiencing issues relating to the loading of posts. We can confirm that Facebook's Workplace and Work Chat apps are also affected by this outage. "We're working to resolve the issue as soon as possible", the Facebook account said on Twitter.

The outages appeared to be concentrated in the Americas and Europe.

When attempting to log in to the site, some users were greeted by a message stating "Facebook will be back soon".

If you tried to post to Facebook or Instagram today and got error messages, you were not alone.

According to the website, Facebook was having issues since 11.56am EDT.

Reports of problems with Facebook's WhatsApp also have been reported.

Many were quick to point out that they are frequently turning to Twitter to check if other websites are down, noting that the platform somehow is always "standing strong" despite service issues elsewhere. The outage spans across Facebook Messenger as well.

The outage is occurring against a political backdrop of legislators in the USA and beyond considering whether large technology firms - not just Facebook - should be broken up.

And there's probably some other underground social media network your kids aren't telling you about.
