Israel No Longer Occupies Golan Heights, US State Department Indicates

Last month, Republican lawmakers in both chambers of Congress introduced bills "to ensure that Israel retains control of the Golan Heights". This territory was taken by military force because it was used as a launching point to attack the State of Israel.

He said he would return to the United States with a mission to get the U.S. to recognize Israeli sovereignty over the territory.

The IDF claims that Hezbollah has established this network under the nose of Syrian President Bashar al-Assad, whose troops alongside Hezbollah operatives reconquered the Syrian Golan Heights this summer seven years after they lost it to rebel groups.

Palestinians have been concerned about the strength of a long-standing US commitment to the creation of a state of their own in the West Bank and Gaza, a pledge stemming from interim peace deals with Israel signed in the 1990s. "The release of the intelligence by Israel could be a deterrent but the establishment of a cell like that is fully consistent with Hezbollah's goals and modus operandi".

"It's impossible to know, but if the threat if its real and intelligence is now available and supports it, there is no reason not to publicize it", he said.

Israel says he arrived in Syria in 2018 with orders to form the Golan File unit, which would Hizbollah to fight Israel from southern Syria as well as southern Lebanon.

With elections approaching in Israel on April 9, some suggested Wednesday's announcement may have had political motivations since it could help burnish Netanyahu's security credentials.

Ongoing clashes just over the border in war-torn Syria and the military build-up of Iranian forces there have made it obvious to observers taht Israel can never leave the Golan Heights.

Israel captured the West Bank and East Jerusalem in the 1967 war and formally annexed the latter in 1980, declaring full sovereignty over the entire city in a move that remains unrecognised by the worldwide community.

Influential Trump ally US Senator Lindsey Graham said on Monday during a visit to the Golan Heights with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu that he would push for US recognition of Israel's sovereignty over the strategic region "now and forever".
