Johnny Football is heading to Memphis to resume his football career. The CFL said he violated his agreement with the league, but has offered no specifics.
The 26-year-old former Heisman Trophy victor last played for the Montreal Alouettes in 2018, where he threw for almost 1,300 yards, five touchdowns and seven interceptions in eight games.
He played just two seasons with the team before he was released.
The AAF's San Antonio Commanders held Manziel's rights but declined to add him.
The Commanders had the rights to Manziel because he played college football at Texas A&M.
"We are pleased to welcome Johnny Manziel to the Alliance of American Football, which we've always described as a league of opportunity for talented players to launch or revitalize their pro football careers", Polian said in a press release. The Express lost quarterback Zach Mettenberger on Saturday, who left after their first offensive snap with an ankle injury - according to the Memphis Commercial Appeal.
The statement from the Alliance said that Manziel "will report to Memphis tomorrow, where we all believe he'll benefit from the coaching and mentorship of Mike Singletary".
He was taken with the No. 22 overall pick in the 2014 National Football League draft by Cleveland. The Montreal Alouettes made him a starter late in the 2018 season, though Manziel struggled in his eight-game showcase. He also ran for 215 yards on 29 carries as Montreal (5-13) missed the CFL playoffs.
Earlier today, it was announced that Manziel had joined the league.
Before Manziel signed with the AAF, co-founder Bill Polian told CBS Sports that the league was "in the process of going through due diligence". Manziel had sought treatment for anger management and alcohol abuse as part of his acquittal on a 2016 charge of domestic violence. The AAF signed Manziel to a player contract, announcing the news during the broadcast of Saturday's Arizona Hotshots-Orlando Apollos game.
Manziel's CFL action was his first in pro football since December 2015.
