The social network's handling of user data has been a flashpoint for controversy since it admitted previous year that Cambridge Analytica, a political consultancy which did work for Donald Trump's 2016 election campaign, used an app that may have hijacked the private details of 87 million users. The site's outage map shows several parts of Europe, South-east Asia and North America are affected.

Social media fans have also noticed problems with Instagram and have taken to Twitter to complain. This not only affects Malaysian users but it also appears to affect worldwide users as well.

Down Detector, a website that tracks when online services suffering from outages, reported that Facebook began having issues at approximately 6:36 a.m.

Facebook and its allied services WhatsApp and Instagram were down for users around the world on Sunday.

One Twitter user joked that it was time to relax now that the social media sites are down: "Seems like all socials owned by Zuckie are down".

Facebook including Instagram, WhatsApp and Messenger faced the biggest outage ever.
