Kadri suspended for remainder of 1st round for cross-check on DeBrusk

Toronto will play Boston at home in Game 3 Monday, and DeBrusk will be in the lineup. Boston evened the series in Game 2 Saturday night at TD Garden with a 4-1 win, but were not able to keep the momentum going in Toronto. David Krejci and Charlie Coyle scored for Boston.

The Bruins are 5-2 in their last 7 meetings with the Maple Leafs and 15-5 in their last 20 games following a win while the home team is 6-2 in the last 8 meetings between these sides. The B's turned that power play into a goal and happily obliged to the Leafs' undisciplined play, tying the series at one with their own 4-1 victory. However, in Game 2, the Bruins went back to their game of physicality and skill and displayed way more discipline than the Leafs, specifically forward Nazem Kadri, who crossed the line one too many times, the worst being a cross-check to the face of Bruins forward Jake DeBrusk.

"He's got to compete at a high level with and without the puck".

Leafs head coach Mike Babcock is fond of saying teams' big stars cancel each other out in the heightened checking in the playoffs and it is the foot soldiers who make the difference.

There is the possibility that Babcock won't have to worry about that until next season if the Leafs are ousted by the Bruins, considering the length of suspension that many expect.

Kadri was then felled by a knee-on-knee hit - again from DeBrusk - that resulted in him limping off before he eventually returned to the fray.

It was the most Rielly has played in a 60-minute game in the playoffs in his National Hockey League career, and Rielly being Rielly, deflected his workhorse outing to speak of the greater good.

Toronto defeated the Bruins Monday night in a nail-biter at Scotiabank Arena 3-2 to take Game 3 and a one-game lead on the B's.

The amusing thing about that was that the on-ice part of his game wasn't even what anxious the Leafs most.

The NHL, if it so decides, could levy a suspension of six games or more considering the hearing is not being done by phone.

Kadri's suspension, while odd in it not being a set number of games, was expected.

The Stanley Cup Playoffs present a very fine line between justified criticism of a player or team, and diving head-first into hot-takery and irrational overreactions.

April 20, 2018 Missed the last 3 playoff games (suspended by nhl). He plays a valuable third-line role for Toronto.

Kadri's retaliatory cross-check on DeBrusk at 14:03 of the third period came after DeBrusk checked Marleau into the curved glass at the Bruins bench. You can see where the emotions got to him, sticking up for a teammate.

This means Kadri is eligible to be suspended in excess of five games. Bruins defenceman Connor Clifton sat out with an undisclosed injury, while winger Marcus Johansson missed a second consecutive game with an illness.

With critics slamming Kadri for being selfish and out of control the last two post-seasons, the Leafs could find some relief by getting rid of his $4.5-million (U.S.) cap hit.
