The internet sensation known as Grumpy Cat has died aged 7. She soon became the universal digital shorthand for displeasure, with thousands of memes and gifs of her being circulated online to communicate apathy or cynicism.

"Rest in peace Tardar Sauce AKA Grumpy Cat".

The mixed-breed cat, whose real name is Tardar Sauce, found fame when a photo of her as a kitten was posted on Reddit in September 2012, her website says. It allowed her to quit her job as a waitress at Red Lobster within days of her cat's internet debut, United States media reported.

According to a statement posted on Friday, Grumpy Cat died on Tuesday 14 May "at home in the arms of her mommy, Tabatha". Thank you to her owners for sharing her with us. She went on to appear on magazine covers, television advertisements and even starred in her own movie "Grumpy Cat's Worst Christmas Ever". Her image was named as the best meme of 2013 at the Webby Awards dethroning Gangnam style and Harlem Shake.

Within days of her first appearance on social media, her owner was able to quit her job as a waitress and the phone "never stopped ringing".

"Grumpy Cat has helped millions of people smile all around the world - even when times were tough", the family said.

Grumpy Cat has 8.5 million fans on Facebook, 2.5 million followers on Instagram and 1.5 million on Twitter. She showed up on NBC News' Today show, ABC News' Good Morning America, CBS Evening News, Anderson Live, VH1's Big Morning Buzz Live, E!
